Walrus raise their young longer than any other pinniped (seal/walrus family) species before they are weaned. A pup can stay with its mom for up to two or even three years. More importantly, walrus need multi-year ice in order to give birth to their pups during the spring and summer. The latest science from the most credible scientists in the world are saying that the Arctic could be free of mulit-year sea ice during the summer months in the next 10 to 30 years having catastrophic effects for many species.
